Vegan Diet:

Basic Premise:

Lose weight and reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and cancer by eating a meat and dairy-free menu.

Allowable Foods:

All foods are allowed EXCEPT meat and dairy products, as well as all eggs.

Brief History:

Vegetarian choices have been found throughout the centuries and across all continents. Many cultures chose vegetarian diets as a part of their religious beliefs. Among the Egyptians, however, (for example) avoiding animal products had medical and ritual prification purposes.

With the introduction of Christianity, virtually all vegan and vegetarian habits disappeared. However, the philosophies reemerged during the Renaissance and became more widespread during the 20th century. The first Vegetarian Society was founded in the UK, Germany, Netherlands and other countries in 1847. Modern promotors pushed the diet into mainstream awarenes as a result of nutritional, ethical, environmental, and economic concerns.

Many modern vegan followers adopted these diets as part of an animal-rights belief. Other motivations are health-related, political, encironmental, cultural, aesthetic, or economic. Where vegetarians are variable, a strict vegan consumes no animal product, including eggs, dairy, beeswax, or honey. Typically this diet applies to a vegan lifestyle, where the same beliefs are applied to everyday living choices and all household goods. (Such as not purching leather goods.)

Dietary Practice:

Dieters agree to maintain a meat, meat byproduct, dairy, and egg-free diet. The daily intake is recommended as:

  • 6 servings grains
  • 5 servings legumes, nuts, and other protiens (peanut butter, chickpeas, tofu, potatoes, soy milk,etc)
  • 4 servings vegetables
  • 2 servings fruit
  • 2 servings healthy fats (sesame oil, avocado, coconut)

Dieters do not have to eliminate all animal-sourced products from their diet immediately; they may choose to phase out by eliminating meat a few times a week and gradually substituting until their diet is wholly animal-free.

Physical Activity:

The Vegan diet does not recommend specific physical activity as part of it's program. It only states what can and cannot be consumed.
